I want to congrat you for this nice website. Its calm, but I like when the community is very small like this.
I just rediscovered this game today. I had played the demo in 2006 but I was not interested at the time (dont know why, perhaps I was busy with another game). Recently I played to Cossacks 2 (one of my favorite games) after a long pause and I decided to search for the others games from GSC game world. I found HoAE, tried it (demo) again after 4 years and loved it. I bought it on ebay and cant wait to receive it tongue . Your site helped me to make the game works on my pc (graphic glitch)
So I wanted to say a little hello to others and to Flame who seems so devoted for this game and fan site even if its quiet smile and I will be around looking for the maps, tips and more.
Thanks,

I am so glad to see that this site in one way or the other helped you. I hope you like the game now wink . As for the community, yeah its really small here - about the calm, I dunno, only time will tell if it won't go dead...As for the Maps and Tips and Other things, you can find much in the Downloads section. For tips, feel free to ask me or anyone, also don't forget to give us all your valuable suggestions.

Kind Regards
Flame Master
(You are welcome) smile

Hi, I'm new to this forum, and this is the exact same thing that happened to me. I played the demo in 2006 but at that time It not captivated my interest, and I just rediscovered HAE this week. I am really having countless hours of fun seeing hundreds and hundreds of units clashing in my computer screen. I also noticed the small community, as I was looking foward for some new custom maps. I also became a little sad because of the few avaliable mods and maps, but on the other hand I feel the community is nice and warm. Thank you guys.

...

P.S.: I am also enjoying playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R - Shadow of Chernobyl, alone at night with all lights off.

Liero,
Wow, Thank you so much for your Support. Happy New Year and also a warm welcome to the Forums smile .

So nice to see that you rediscovered the game. smile . And the company GSC along with it. I heard STALKER 2 is work in progress. Did you try the other games in the series? "Clear Sky" and "Call of Pripyat"?
Have Fun.
Kind Regards
Flame Master

Hi Flame,

Yes, HoAE was a pleasant surprise for me. I just wish more people could give this game a chance, since I find the demo version does little show how great it is.

I read about STALKER 2 but it's just what I know so far. I hope they preserve and even improve the role-play aspects and the freedom of choice inside the game world. Personally I like games where your choices and behavior affect the way NPC's react, so you can try new things each time.

I was playing STALKER-SHOC, along with the mod called "STALKER Complete 2009". I was navigating the web when I read that the company behind Stalker also made HoAE and then I remembered the name and decided to give it a second chance (this time with the retail version), and here I am now.

I don't know if I will play Clear Sky or Call of Pripyat so soon, since I intent to play the mod "Oblivion Lost" too. I never felt so immersed in a FPS since I played Deus Ex many years ago. I like games with freedom of play, and STALKER gave me exactly that kind of experience I was looking for.

Ah Glad STALKER lead you here smile . You know, I started modding so that the game can have a little larger audience and more or less an improved gameplay.
I heard about STALKER Complete 2009, was blown away by their graphics improvements. And I also heard about Oblivion Lost but that was wayy back when it was in development. Its ironic that I know about STALKER and even own a copy but never played the game :P . I better give it a try now. Though, I have Clear Sky and not SOC.
Any other RTS/RPG you played other than HoAE?
Kind Regards
Flame Master

STALKER has amazing gameplay, but the graphics are kind of dated even compared to other games at the time of its release. Many consider the mod Complete 2009 as a must have if you want to give a boost in graphics to make it up-to-date. Besides, the atmospheric improvements like better/night cicles and spooky night sounds and better AI really adds to the experience.
I just recently tested Oblivion Lost mod, but it is very nice if you want more challenge and randomness, thus making the game more scary and unpredictable. Many consider that Complete 2009 mod is more suited for first time players as it preserves the playability intended by the developers and Oblivion Lost is for experienced players looking for new stuff and extra content.

Now, back to HoAE, it is very cool and entertaining mix of RTS/RPG, which is hard to find these days. There are some games like that I remember but I will mention only a handful of them.

Warcraft III: I remember playing WC3 and I love the way they incorporated elements of RPG in a RTS game. But I am not good at too much micromanagement of units and heroes at the same time, so I became attracted by the custom map for WC3 called Defense of the Ancients (DotA) as you have to control only one hero while other units are automatically built and commanded toward the enemy base. Then it came a game called League of Legends, which basically ports the explendid playability of DotA to a dedicated platform, and it's wonderful.

Rising Kingdoms: A very unknown game made by a bulgarian company, which is basically a WC3 but in 2D, which detracts people from even trying it as it is not graphically impressive. Besides, sound effects are very simple. If you can ignore these drawbacks, I found the playability quite interesting. You can choose 3 factions and each faction has 4 champions that play diferently from one another, the you collect glory points to learn skills, equip items and drink potions to increase your stats. The game plays much like WC3. If only it was released a couple years early maybe it could stand a chance compared with better known titles.

Celtic Kings - Rage of War: A 2D RTS featuring Romans vs. Gauls which allows armies of hundreds of units on screen at same time. You dont command units directly, but instead you control heroes and a hero control the army attached to his command. The hero gains levels and can benefit units under his command. Although the RPG aspects are not very emphazised, I found the playability very enjoyable if you like hundreds of units clashing together. Celtic Kings have 2 sequels called Punic Wars and Great Battles of Rome.

Dungeons & Dragons - Dragonshard: At first a RTS themed upon D&D seemed an awesome idea, but after playing Dragonshard I became very disappointed with the final product. First, your hero do not level up, which make him just like a regular unit, second your regular units level up but not through fighting, but simply by upgrading at the building they are trained. Third, the bases are very plain and boring. All doesn't mean the game is a total failure as it has many good aspects like collectable cristal shards falling from the sky, beautiful monster designs and animations and dark underground levels where you took a few soldiers to search for treasures just like a regular RPG. I just think this was not enough to stand firm compared to other better conceived games.

Kohan II - Kings of War: Sequel of a well praised RTS, but not the best example of mixed RTS/RPG game, but nonetheless a great underestimated title. This game is a solid fantasy themed RTS game, with less emphasis on base and resouces and more on tactics of combat. It sometimes resembles Battle for Middle Earth but the hero fights attached to a company of soldiers. The outcome of combat is decided by many factors like level, terrain, formation, flanking and even morale, as the more a company fights, it spends his morale bar until a break point when it run away fleeing and you temporarily lose control until it recovers some morale. A experience recommended more for RTS fans and less for RPG fans.

...

Well, I think I wrote too much, sorry for that, but I love RTS and RPG games. I played so many of then and it was hard for me to choose only a few examples. By the time I am writing this post I am very hooked on HoAE with it's unique feature of giving the player the option to play as a regular RTS, a classical RPG or a mix of both. I feel sorry for a game like this being so underrated. Sometimes I like to scavenge for not well known games and I found really nice forgotten jewels over these past years.

Ahm...I am overwhelmed, in a good way wink and happy to have a game veteran here.
I played Warcraft 3 and I liked DoTA. I added some bombs from HoAE's side and script from Xeno to make an HoAE style DoTa but however its still incomplete.
There are other RTS games from GSC and they all have the morale system, its possible in HoAE but not implemented. Its a nice thing that you look for forgotten games and find beauty in them. Enjoy your stay here. When you are done checking out the game, please do take time to check out the mod and give some valuable feedback. smile .
Kind Regards
Flame Master
